Co-Parenting With Peace

Game plan

Co-parenting isn’t about forgetting the past—it’s about making peace with it. Sometimes two people have hurt each other, made mistakes, said things they regret, or simply realized that the relationship wasn’t meant to continue. But when a child is involved, holding onto anger can create a situation where the child feels caught in the middle.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending nothing happened. It means choosing not to let the past control the future. Be truthful with each other. Communicate. Respect boundaries. Let go of old arguments and focus on what matters most: giving your child love, stability, support, and the opportunity to have a healthy relationship with both parents.

Your child shouldn’t have to choose sides. They shouldn’t feel guilty for loving their mother or father. They shouldn’t have to carry the weight of problems that belong between adults.

Sometimes peace means accepting that you and your child’s other parent may never see everything the same way. That’s okay. You don’t have to agree on everything to work together. You just have to understand that your child deserves both parents when it is safe and healthy for them.

Stop using the child as a messenger. Stop speaking negatively about the other parent in front of them. Stop making decisions out of anger, jealousy, pride, or revenge.

Heal what you can. Forgive what you can. Learn from the past. Tell the truth. Set healthy boundaries. And move forward with peace.

Because co-parenting isn’t about winning against each other. It’s about making sure the child doesn’t lose because the relationship ended.
